Balancing resort-like qualities with home-like comfort is no easy feat, yet Berwick by the Sea has mastered it. This exceptional balance is only achievable with someone who has an eye for detail and a heart full of dedication at the helm, such as Berwick by the Sea’s talented Director of Hospitality, Cindy Block.

Cindy oversees the day-to-day operations in housekeeping, front and back of the house, ensuring Berwick’s dining experiences are elevated and special events are seamlessly executed. She even ensures fresh flowers adorn the tables 364 days a year, a testament to her attention to detail.

“Residents often joke about getting me a step-counter to see just how many steps I’m taking in a day,” says Cindy. “From the moment I arrive on site, my days are constantly dynamic and filled with activity, reflecting the meticulous effort required to curate the Berwick experience. Despite the challenges the day might throw at me, I am deeply passionate about my work and find great fulfillment in what I do.”

Apart from daily operations, Cindy plans and executes special dinners like the recent ‘100-mile dinner,’ where residents enjoyed a multi-course meal sourced entirely within 100 miles of Berwick by the Sea. Themed events such as Pirate Theme Night and pop-up workshops on resident interests also keep the community engaged.

“Ensuring our residents always have something new to look forward to each month is a top priority for everyone. Along with supporting them in maintaining as much independence as possible,” says Cindy.

Residents can opt for weekly room cleanings or seasonal deep cleans courtesy of Berwick’s meticulous housekeeping team.

“My housekeeping manager and her team meticulously attend to each room. Our team takes pride in their work and our residents truly care for our team members,” notes Cindy

Residents also enjoy three dining options: a formal dining room, buffet-style bistro, and a private dining room for intimate settings upon request.

“We have chefs who started their culinary journey here at Berwick with the goal of pursuing their red seal, I am proud to say with the help of Berwick four of our chefs are now Red Seal Certified,” adds Cindy. “I believe our work culture plays a significant role in our success. Staff are encouraged to continue their education and provided ample opportunities to advance their careers.”

Cindy notes that staff members from all areas of Berwick interact with residents on a daily basis and that those interactions directly affect the daily experiences of residents.

“Emotions are contagious, happy staff means happy, well-cared for residents,” says Cindy.
